Search Engine Submission

6th March 2010

In order for people to find your Web Site, you must get listed in the Search Engines. There is a lot more to doing business on the Internet than just building your web site. Although you can still get listed in some Search Engines for Free, you will have to pay with either dollars or time to get a high search engine ranking. The term Search Engine Listing is often used to include Crawlers, Directories, and Pay-Per-Click Advertising. Here is what we will be covering in the next few pages:

    1. Free Search Engine Submission
    2. Using Pay-Per-Click Listings
    3.
    Search Engine Optimization
    4.
    Search Engine Submission Resources

Search Engines crawl the Internet with robots and use sophisticated algorithms to add and rank web sites to their listings. Getting a high ranking in this case requires Search Engine Optimization. This means ensuring that your web pages are accessible to search engines and focused in ways that help improve the chances they will be found. There are now only three real players in this space; Google, Yahoo, and Live Search. All of the other Search Engines use one of these three for the source of their data, so if you get listed in these you will show up in the others.

Directories use people to review the web sites being added to the directory listings. Many of these now charge a fee to get your web site listed. You can still get added to some of them free, but you are likely to be ranked lower if you haven’t paid to be listed. Getting listed in the Open Directory Project is a multi-step process, but well worth your time as many search engines get results from these pages. You should first read the Instructions on how to add your site. Then look at the categories in the directory to decide which one you would like your site to be listed in. To add your site use the Add URL link on the directory page you would like your site to be included in.

Pay-Per-Click is when search engines allow you to bid for keywords or search terms in order to obtain a high search engine ranking. When you out bid your competition, you will receive the top search engine ranking. Many of these paid advertisements are included prominently in other search engines. Keywords or Search Terms are the phrases that a person types into a search engine when they are searching for web sites. Your goal is to get your web site a high search engine ranking when a particular keyword phrase is searched on. Search Engine Optimization is the process of setting up your web site so that it ranks high for your keywords in the Search Engines (especially the crawler-based search engines).

Search Engine Ranking, Search Engine Positioning, and Search Engine Placement all refer to how well a web site is listed for particular keywords and search terms on each Search Engine. The ultimate goal for many people is to get a “top ten” ranking for a particular keyword or search terms.

Search Engine Marketing and Promotion is the process of managing your search engine ranking and should be a part of your overall web site marketing plan and includes all of the topics discussed on this web page. We will cover the different aspects of search engine submission on the pages of this web site, including some tools and additional resources you can use to improve your search engine ranking.

You should prepare for submitting your web site to any directory, crawler-based search engine, or pay-per-click search engine by writing a description that is 25 words or less than can be used by the search engines to display to people what your web site is about. Before doing this, determine what commonly searched-upon words people use to find your product, service, or information in the search engines. Since there is too much competition for single word “keywords”, select “keyword phrases” that are two or three words in length. Use the results you get from working with the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and WordTracker to compile a list of about a dozen keyword phrases to use when creating content for your web site and be sure to use the two or three most important ones in your description.

Now let’s look at what you need to do to submit your web site to the Big 3 search engines.

Search Engine Optimization

27th February 2010

Search engine optimization means improving the chances that your web pages will be found by the search engines. The term “search engine” is often used generically to describe both crawler-based search engines and human-powered directories. These two types of search engines gather their listings in different ways.

Crawler-Based Search Engines Crawler-based search engines, such as Google, create their listings with ”robot” programs that “crawl” or “spider” the web. The pages that are displayed on a search are based on what the “robots” find. If you change your web pages, crawler-based search engines eventually find these changes, and this can effect how your web site is listed. Page titles, meta tags, body copy and other page elements all impact your page ranking.

People-Powered Directories A human-powered directory, such as Yahoo, depends on people for its listings. You submit a short description to the directory for your entire site. A search looks for matches only in the descriptions you submit. Changing your web pages has no effect on your listing.

Hybrid Search Results It is now common for a search engine to present both human-powered listings and crawler-based results. Usually mixed search results favor one type of listings over another. For example, Yahoo first presents its human-powered listings, but it also presents crawler-based results from Google.

Search Relevancy Crawler-based search engines determine page relevancy by following a set of rules, known as an algorithm. Although exactly how a particular search engine’s algorithm works is a closely-kept trade secret all major search engines follow these general criteria.

Keywords – Location and Frequency One of the the main criteria in a page ranking algorithm involves the location and frequency of keywords on a web page. Pages with the search terms appearing in the HTML title tag are considered more relevant to a search than other pages. Search engines also consider web pages with keywords near the top of the page,  such as in the headline or the first few paragraphs of text, to be more relevant to the search topic. In addition to location of keywords, frequency is the other major factor in how search engines determine relevancy. A search engine will analyze how often keywords appear in relation to other words in a web page. Those with a higher frequency are often deemed more relevant than other web pages. HOWEVER, we must point out that having too high a frequency will offend both your reader and the search engines. This is considered “spamming” a search engine and will actually lower your page ranking. Search engines, and people scanning your web page, want to quickly find the specific information they are looking for on that page. The information they are looking for are the “keyword phrases” you compiled when writing your web site description. These key phrases play an important role in obtaining a high search engine ranking, and getting the reader to stay on your web site.

The page title tag is the most important location for your keyword phrases.  Not only does this count for a lot in the search engine rankings, its the first line people see displayed in the listings. This tag has the double duty of catching the attention of the search engines and influencing a person to click on your listing. These 8 to 10 words must include your target keywords, starting with the most important.

Your page headline should include your most important key phrases and encourage your reader to read your web page. Work your list of key phrases into the first few paragraphs in a way that makes the page relevant to the search engines while being easy for your reader to follow.

Meta Tags Meta tags are not as important as they used to be for search engine ranking because many of the search engines don’t use them as part of their ranking criteria. Even so, its good to its still good to have a short list of your important keywords in the keyword tag. The description tag may actually be more important as some of the engines still use this under the title to describe your site in their listings. Since you need a short description when you submit your web site to directories, it only takes a couple minutes to add this tag to your web site. Description tag – provides a description of the search engine to show with your listing. Keywords tag – provides keywords for the search engine to associate with your page.

Popularity and Click-Through Some search engines, Google in particular, consider how “popular” a web page is by analyzing how many pages link to that page to determine how “important” it is. More popular pages will get a ranking boost. Another way some search engines adjust ranking is with click-through measurement. In short, this means that a search engine may watch what results someone selects for a particular search, then eventually drop high-ranking pages that aren’t attracting clicks, while promoting lower-ranking pages that do pull in visitors. Now that you understand a little about how the search engines work, lets check out some tools you can use to make this process easier.

Promotional Products for Marketing Your Business

20th February 2010

‘Promoting your business is an ongoing process that keeps your business visible to prospects and clients. While you should use promotional products to market your business throughout the year, there will be times when you should use them for a specific marketing campaign.  Either way, successful promotional product campaigns require a plan that includes goals and a way to measure your results. Promotional products are useful articles of merchandise imprinted with a company name or message and usually distributed free to a target audience. Most promotional items are inexpensive and designed to be seen over and over again. Popular items range from caps, coffee mugs, and computer accessories to shirts, sports items, and stress relievers. Imprinted products are most effective when they are actively distributed as marketing tools to meet specific goals.

There are many ways you can use these promotional items to market your business. Let’s take a look at some ways to use them.

1. Determine the purpose of the promotional campaign. Are you interested in getting additional business from your current customers, or are you trying to reach prospect new clients? Develop a theme with a message that helps to solidify your company’s name, service or products in your target customer’s mind.

2. Set Your Goals. Set some goals for the type of response you expect to get from your promotional products, especially if you are using them for a specific campaign, like the introduction of a new product or service.  Make sure you can measure your results by asking new customers where they found out about your company.

3. Selecting the right promotional items. Many businesses hand out promotional pens or refrigerator magnets, but there’s something to be said for not being one of the crowd. Choose a promotional product that ties into your line of business or the theme of your promotional campaign. While computer related businesses might hand out items like a mouse pad, a unique idea used by a marketing company we know is handing out light bulb shaped stress relievers with the tag line ‘Bright Ideas for Marketing Your Business.’ Another way to generate ideas is to think about situations in which you might encounter prospects. For example, if you golf often, consider imprinting your company web site and phone number on some golf tees.

Examples of using promotional products. Promoting your company’s Web Site. Every item you choose to promote your business should include your web site address. This includes everything from pens, to magnets, to those jackets you give to your best customers. Giving something small away is also a good way to persuade visitors to your web site to register with you.  While you can give away a special report in exchange for an email address, if you give them something you have to send out, they will also have to give you their mailing address. You might even consider a monthly drawing for a company cap or T-shirt to the lucky winner who registers with your web site. And don’t forget to post the monthly winners on your web site.

Building Trade Show Traffic Participating at a trade shows is one thing, getting people to your booth is quite another. This is a situation to choose a unique item that your visitors will not only hang onto, but others will see and say “Where did you get that? I want one of those!” You probably still have some items in your office that you chased down at the last trade show you attended.

Premiums We’ve all seen the ads on TV that magazines use to entice new subscribers with the offer of a free gift. You can do the same thing by offering a promotional item to anyone that places an order over a certain amount.  This is certainly worth the dollar or two you have to pay for the item, and it just goes in the box when you ship your product to your customer, so there’s no additional postage.

Increasing Customer Loyalty. Do you want to thank customers who have been with you for many years, given you referrals, or made a substantial purchase at your business? Giving them a more substantial promotional item, like a golf shirt with your company logo, would be a great way to thank them for helping your business to grow! Don’t forget to use some of your advertising budget for promotional products.  They will remind your customers to give you a call the next time that they need your product or service.

Link Popularity

30th January 2010

The more links to your Web Site, the more traffic you should get and the better your Link Popularity. Besides the direct traffic that links to your Web Site provide, another benefit to improving your Web Site Link Popularity is that some of the search engines, in particular Goggle, now include this as an important factor in ranking web sites. An excellent way to increase your Link Popularity is through Reciprocal Linking. Reciprocal Links Reciprocal linking is one of the most effective ways of driving targeted visitors to your web site. In order to be successful you have to carefully target and choose the sites you want to link with. Focus on linking to high-traffic, quality web sites, which will interest your visitors and which complement your site, not compete with it. Simply put, it is a big mistake to link to a competing site with a similar product. You will lose business that way. Instead, you should look for a few high traffic sites to trade links with, rather than a bunch of low traffic sites. The results are much better. There are a couple of ways to look for web sites for potential reciprocal links. The first is to go to one of the major search sites like Yahoo! or Goggle. Enter the keywords and key phrases which relate to the theme of your web site to find out which sites are coming out on top. Review these sites to find some that complement yours. Send the webmasters of these sites an email and ask them if they would be willing to exchange links with you. You can even provide them with a keyword or description to link to your site from. As long as you are not competing with them, you stand a good chance to complete this link exchange. Once you have completed this, consider checking out the web sites that link to the ones you have traded links with already. The next thing to do is try to take traffic away from your competition. If you don’t know them already, you probably found a good number of them while you were searching for complementary sites. Now is the time to make use of that information. Go to www.google.com, or another search engine that provides information on which web sites link to which. Say, for example, that one of your competitor’s web sites was www.competitor.com. Instead of doing a regular search, type link:www.competitor.com. Both of these search engines will return all the sites in their database that link to www.competitor.com. Since many of the sites that are linking to your competitors are sending them traffic (and business), they are prime candidates to ask for more links. Chances are if these sites link to your competitor they will link to you too. One way to make this process easier is with software designed to help you increase your link popularity. Axandra’s iBusinessPromoter (IBP) is a multi-award winning web site promotion software tool that has a module that helps you build your business network quickly and easily. IBP greatly simplifies the task of finding partner web sites that could link to your site. Those partner sites mean more targeted and free visitors to your site and they greatly increase your link popularity, resulting in much better search engine rankings for your site. An easy way to get started is to download the FREE Trial version today. You even get a free eBook that teaches you everything you need to know about link management.

Pay-Per-Click Search Engine Advertising

23rd January 2010

All of the major search engines display paid listings. With this form of search engine advertising you can pay to have your web site appear in the top of the search term results you are interested in within a day or two. If your goal is to build visibility on search engines quickly then Pay-Per-Click listings are an option that you should explore. No other route can put you in the top results of many major search engines in such a short period of time.

Yahoo Logo

Yahoo Logo

Overture is the largest “pay-per-click” search engine. It allows you “bid” on the keyword search terms you wish to be listed under. You agree to pay a certain amount each time someone clicks on your listing. An account requires a $50 minimum deposit, and you must spend at least $20 per month. Since you have control over how much you want to bid for your keywords you don’t have to spend more than the $20 minimum each month. If nothing else, its worth opening an account for a couple of months to experiment with different keywords while also driving some quality traffic to your site. After that you may be getting enough traffic through Search Engine Optimization. While some people go directly to the Overture web site to search, most people encounter Overture’s paid listings via Yahoo!, MSN, Lycos, AltaVista, and Netscape.

Google Logo

Google Logo

Google offers Pay-Per-Click advertising with its AdWords Program. Google charges a $5 activation fee and charges a per click fee based on your click through rate and a maximum amout you set. This means that you can be listed higher than someone paying more for your chosen keyword if your site is more relevant. One advantage to this approach is that you only pay the minimum amount required to get to the top of the listing, so you don’t have to monitor your position every day. AdWords results are also provided to AOL, Ask Jeeves, IWon, Netscape, and Teoma. In addition, with the advent of AdSense your Google AdWords Banners will appear on websites with relevant content. AdSense could be a great way for you to make money with your web site. Now that you’ve got yourself listed, let’s make sure your pages shine by optimizing for the web crawlers.

Email Newsletters (Ezines)

9th January 2010

One of the best ways to promote your business is by writing an e-mail newsletter. This allows you to easily stay in touch with your clients and potential customers. It also helps you to generate trust, develop brand awareness, and build future business. By providing something your clients want with every issue, you also have an opportunity to sell additional products and services. While publishing an e-zine is a big commitment, distributing a newsletter on a weekly or monthly basis can keep your business in the minds of your current and potential customers.

As we mentioned in our Top Ten Tips for Marketing Your Business a Free e-mail newsletter is an excellent way give something away something of value to prospective customers to give them a feel for the quality of your products or services. When you provide something that people find useful, don’t be surprised when you get a phone call from a potential client that read your newsletter because one of your subscribers found it interesting enough to forward to his colleagues. Here are some tips for creating your newsletter. 1. Define a purpose and theme for your newsletter. First, decide what you are trying to accomplish for your business with your newsletter. Then determine a consistent message that you want to get across to your customers with every issue. For most of us, our purpose is to get more business. You can do this by showing your customers that you are an authority in your field by providing them with useful information for free. This will build up a trust in you that will allow potential customers to be comfortable doing business with you even if they have not personally met you. 2. Subscribe to related newsletters. Here are several reasons to subscribe to related newsletters: – Keep an eye on what your competition is doing – Stay on top of the latest news in your field – Get some ideas for articles you’d like to include in your newsletter – Have first hand knowledge of quality publications to advertise your own newsletter in 3. Create a template that includes consistent topics and format. The decision on using HTML vs. Text for your newsletter is not one to be taken lightly. While creating an HTML newsletter is more work than using a Text based newsletter, one important benefits is a more professional look. Either way, make sure you newsletter has a consistent look and has the same ‘Departments’ each time you send it out. For example, we include something about Marketing, Promotions, and Search Engines every month. 4. Find a service provider to handle your subscriber sign-up and e-mail distribution. There are at least a couple of dozen companies that provide email marketing services. One place that’s good to start out with is MailerMailer. They have a free service that you can use for up to 200 messages per month. Once you get beyond that, we recommend choosing a paid for service to handle this chore for you. Another inexpensive service you can try before you buy is Aweber. 5. Set up a regular schedule, and get your newsletter out on time each month (or week). Put it on your calendar so that you make it a regular part of your routine. Once your readers get used to receiving your valuable content, they will look forward to hearing from your on a regular basis. 6. Write your newsletter. Profiting From Affiliate Programs

19th December 2009

An affiliate program (also known as a reseller, associate, referral or partner programs) is an arrangement where the seller of a product or service pays a commission to affiliates that refer paying customers to the seller’s web site. Affiliate programs can help you make more money online in two ways. The first is by joining the affiliate programs of companies that offer complementary products or services and earning a commission on sales to people you refer to these businesses. The second is to start your own affiliate program so other people can refer business to you.

Joining Affiliate Programs

In a simple affiliate program, you place a banner ad, graphic or text link on your web site which is linked to the site of the business you are promoting. This link is coded with your unique affiliate ID so that the site visitor is recorded at the selling site as having originated from your site, so you are credited with the sale. You are normally paid a fixed percentage (commission) of the sales price of the visitor’s purchase. Some more sophisticated affiliate programs are multi-tier and allow you to earn commissions on both the sales generated directly from your site, as well as a percentage from sales generated from new sub-affiliates you refer to the product seller. There are several benefits from joining affiliate programs, especially when you are starting your online business. You don’t have to create your own product or service, you make money by promoting someone else’s. Rather than concerning yourself with the logistics of shipping products and collecting payments to customers, you make your money by driving traffic to the seller’s Web site. The biggest disadvantage of affiliate programs is that it is the owner of the product/service who earns the most of the profit on each sale that you make. Do not rely on affiliate programs for the bulk of your business, but use the income to complement the income you generate from your own products and services.

Choosing the Right Affiliate Programs for Your Business

Choose affiliate programs for products and services that relate to the theme of your Web site. By selecting programs that complement the subject matter of your site, you will be referring your site visitors to sites that are interest and relevant to them. This will result in a higher conversion ratio (the ratio of visitors to purchases) because your visitors will be pre-qualified as prospects for the seller’s product or service.

Quality Products and Services

Look for programs from reputable companies that offer quality products and services that you would be comfortable recommending to your own customers. In fact, consider buying the product or service you are recommending. A personal testimonial is the best sales copy you add to your Web site.

Affiliate Agreement

Look for a detailed affiliate agreement (contract) that spells out the responsibilities of both the seller and the affiliate. Watch out for agreements that are confusing or do not give you credit for a sale made to someone you originally referred to the site, that does not purchase until they return later directly to the site. In addition, make sure the agreement specifies ‘spamming’ as grounds for termination. This protects both the company and the affiliates.

Commissions

Promoting someone else’s affiliate program requires that you divert traffic away from your web site and towards someone else’s. Make sure you’re properly compensated with a high commission structure. Be sure to set up your link so that when the visitor clicks on it, a new browser window is opened for the target site. This way, your site is still available to the visitor so they can go back to it once they’ve finished at the site your link has taken them to. Look for affiliate programs that will credit you with not only THIS sale, but on all other sales the customer may make in the future. Many programs are set up so that the customer is identified as “yours” so that when the customer returns to the target site several months later, the sale is recorded as having been generated by you. Try to include programs that offer residual commissions for your business. For example, when someone signs up for web hosting, they normally sign up for a service that continues every month. A good program will pay you monthly for each customer that continues the service rather than only paying you an upfront commission. Look for programs that allow you real-time access to your sales so you can keep easy track of your commissions.

Affiliate Support Resources

Look at the support that the business offers to its affiliates to help them make sales. They should provide resources like sample ads, banners, logos, and text links to add to your site. In addition, they should provide insightful ideas on how you can maximize your sales. A company with a good support system most likely has many successful affiliates.

Making Money

The best way to make money from an affiliate program is to have hundreds of unique visitors to your site every day. In addition, you must have a site that attracts repeat visitors. Your site must be worthy of your visitor’s time and interest before you can even begin to think about converting that visitor into a paying customer. Create a site with real content that will keep your visitors coming back for more. Instead of using the ads or banners that the seller provides you with to promote his site, include the URL’s and key words as text links throughout your web site. You should have a page on your web site that is dedicated to each affiliate program you join, but don’t go overboard by over selling. What you need to do to succeed with affiliate programs is to get your potential customer to click through to the seller’s web site in an ‘open-to-buy’ frame of mind. If the affiliate program is good, the affiliate web site will make the sale. So don’t try to sell the product from your web site, just aim to get a click on your affiliate link. Don’t forget to promote your site by including a link to the site in the signature of every email you send and in your own email newsletter. When someone makes a purchase from your affiliate link, send them a follow-up letter thanking them for their business. At the end of the letter, tell them about your other affiliate products and how they may help them.

Google AdSense Will Generate Additional Income from Your Web Site

Google AdSense is for web publishers who want to make more revenue from advertising but don’t want to serve untargeted ads to their users. Google solves this dilemma by delivering text-based Google AdWords ads that are relevant to what your readers see on your pages. For every ad clicked, you receive money (a share of what Google receives from the advertiser). AdSense ads are just like the AdWords ads you see on the right-hand side of a Google search results page… except they are on YOUR site. Google uses its advanced, proprietary technology and algorithms to determine the content of each of your site’s Web pages. It then delivers ads that are contextually relevant to your audience. AdSense rewards you for creating web sites rich in high-quality, focused content that brings readers back to your site again and again. In many ways, this is better than affiliate programs because you don’t have to manage it and you get paid just for sending people to advertisers web sites, even if they don’t buy anything.
